This area for which a special grant has been applied for lies within the Lusulu Coalfield in the Mid-Zambezi Karoo Basin. The application covers an area of 40 700 hectares. The K2-3 sequence at the Lusula Coalfield has 2 main coal horizons, the older Main Seam (up to 10m thick) & the 2nd A Seam (2.5 - 4.5m thick & upto 3.5m above the Main Seam) The coal seams are found interbedded with carbonaceous mudstone. The maximum thickness of the Main Seam is 10m and the lower portions have excellent coking properties & contain ash contents of less than 10% but the sulphur content can be relatively high. The upper portion of the seam are higher in ash & are used for power generation.
